Crawl 4 Christ 2010

Who's your Spotter?

Location

The Ranch is located about 5 miles south of Seymour, MO on HWY K. Contained within the 930+ acres of terrain are miles of fantastic trails ranging from level 1 easy to level 5 hardcore. There's something for everyone here! New trails are being cut and added frequently.

Operation hours: You may wheel at the ranch at all hours while open, but the campground, obstacle course and mud pit close at midnight. If you wheel later than midnight you will have to park your rig outside the gates/fence and walk in. The gates will be locked at midnight and reopened at 6am. Quite time for the campground is from 12:00am to 6:00am.

Wheelin' article by Jim McCartney

Take a ride with Brandon Powell and you will quickly understand that wearing seatbelts is not optional. The 31-year-old co-owner of the Southern Missouri Off Road Ranch certainly takes the road less traveled.  Seated behind the wheel of a vehicle that’s part Chevy truck, part Jeep and part custom fabrication, he heads out on the ranch’s relatively smooth main road at a fast pace. But when he reaches a trail called “Double Whammy” he lets the vehicle motor slow the big tires to a crawl.  At this point the unschooled passenger would be well advised to hang on. The reason for the multiple steel grips welded to the ceiling becomes apparent as the trail quickly earns its “extreme” status in the park’s map. The trail — Brandon uses the term loosely it would seem — begins as a narrow, boulder-strewn pathway that in rainy weather would be a Class V rapid. Bouncing off of rock ledges that would be hard to navigate on foot, the vehicle negotiates a tight, rootinfested turn that points it uphill.  Here’s where the true nature of the ride becomes apparent. The view of fall foliage turns to blue sky as Brandon guns the big engine. The tires bite in protest, and anything not strapped in heads for the back of the rig.  Surely nothing short of a billy goat can make it up this hill. But Brandon does, barely needing the massive amount of horsepower under his ...... more

Twas the Night before SMORR….

And all through the house, every creature was stirrin, even the spouse!

Remember when you were a kid and Christmas was just weeks away. The anticipation and excitement grew stronger every day until the night before finally arrived! That’s the way it was with the members of our club that were going to SMORR (Southern Missouri Off-Road Ranch) for the first time. Finally all the preparation is complete, your rig is ready to go, all the camping stuff is gathered and loaded and clothes are packed.

Thursday after work Stan and Brian hit the road to make the three and a half hour trip to Seymour, Missouri. SMORR is located about 5 miles south of Seymour, MO on HWY K. and contains over 930 acres fantastic trails ranging from easy to hardcore. Stan staked out some campsites for those still dreaming of the trip to come. Chris, Casey and I left Friday morning about 8:30 and were at the park by 11:30. After setting up camp and getting some lunch we were ready to sample the terrain. The weather was about 80 degrees and sunny, the ground was dry and dusty, and the time we had been anticipating for so many weeks was finally here ..... more

Trail Ratings

Level

Description

 1

Four-wheel drive will be needed occasionally for a few "tough" spots. These trails are great for those that have never ventured off-road before!  Fun for the whole family.

 2

Four-wheel drive will be needed a lot. Stock vehicles with stock tires are OK. Lot's of fun with some challenging spots for stock vehicles.  Good introduction to off-roading!

 3

Challenging, for moderately experienced off-road drivers requiring more concentration. At least 32" aggressive treads are needed, rear locking differentials are recommended.

4

For experienced wheelers only! At least 33" tires and front/rear lockers are a must. A winch and tree strap is recommended. These trails require a co-driver / spotter and heavy concentration.

 5

You must have a winch and tree straps, 36" or taller rubber, locked front and rear, and have little regard for your rig's body panels. Cosmetic and mechanical damage very likely on some of these trails. These trails require a co-driver / spotter and your undivided attention.
